INSPIRED
Kelowna (/kəˈloʊnə/) is a city on Okanagan Lake in the Okanagan Valley in the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada. It serves as the head office of the Regional District of the Central Okanagan. The name Kelowna derives from an Okanagan language term for “grizzly bear”.
The Legend Says…
Freezing cold nights forced an early settler of Kelowna named August Gillard, a burly, bearded man, into his underground dwelling to keep warm. Sitting next to his fire with nothing but a little ale and his catch of the day, heard a commotion coming from outside his abode. Upon crawling out of his buried den, his sights landed on a group of local passerby. Curious about what they were seeing; a hulking, shaggy creature coming out of the ground surrounded by the smoke of Gillard’s fire; they began to chant “Kim-ach-touch”, the native words for ‘bear’. City planners entertained by the story, gave it a nod by naming their new and growing city after it, over some time becoming Kelowna, meaning ‘grizzly bear’ as it was easier to pronounce.
